Mount Elgon National Park is a national park 140 kilometres (87 mi) northeast of Lake Victoria. The park covers an area of 1,279 square kilometres (494 sq mi) and is bisected by the border of Kenya and Uganda. The Ugandan part of the park covers 1,110 square kilometres (430 sq mi) while the Kenyan part covers 169 square kilometres (65 sq mi).

Mount Elgon National Park is named after Mount Elgon, an extinct shield volcano on the border of Uganda and Kenya.


Elephants and buffalo can be found on the lower slopes of Mount Elgon. Mount Elgon National Park is also home to a variety of small antelope and duiker, as well forest monkeys, including the black-and-white colobus and blue monkey. red-tailed monkey have been reported after being thought to be locally extinct. Both leopard and hyena existed there in the late 1990s.

Mount Elgon National Park is home to at least 144 bird species. Of particular interest are Jackson’s francolin, the eastern bronze-naped pigeon, Hartlaub’s turaco, the Tacazze sunbird and the endangered lammergeier, due to their restricted range.

Together with the fauna and flora, the park has a variety of scenery; this includes cliffs, caves, waterfalls, gorges, mesas, calderas, hot springs, and the mountain peaks.The most popular areas are the four explorable, vast caves where frequent night visitors such as elephants and buffaloes come to lick the natural salt found on the cave walls. Kitum cave, with overhanging crystalline walls, enters 200 m into the side of Mt. Elgon.


At the Endebess Bluff there a panoramic view of the areas’ escarpments, gorges, mesas, and rivers. The highest peak of Mt. Elgon on the Kenya side, Koitoboss, measures 13,852 ft (4,155 m), and is easily reached by hikers in about two hours from the road’s end. Activities include

ick up by Inter-tropical Tours representative and set off on eastbound road to Mountain Elgon via Jinja and Mbale towns. Mountain Elgon is a 4,321 metre high extinct volcano which in pre-historic time stood taller than Kilimanjaro does today. It first erupted 24 million years ago. Spectacular scenery is the main attraction for hiker on this undemanding mountain with a variety of forest monkeys, and about 300 bird species not recorded elsewhere in Uganda.

Overnight at hotel – B/B.

After breakfast, drive to trails head at the Budadiri park headquarters to begin 4- hour hike walking through slopes of montane and bamboo vegetation, arriving at the Sasa River Camp. Overnight at Sasa River Camp.

After breakfast, continue to ascend through landscape of extraordinary moorland vegetation. The climate and vegetation often changes with altitude until you arrive at the Mudde Cave. Overnight at Mudde Cave Campsite.

After breakfast, proceed to Wagagai, the highest peak. You will have spectacular views of rare high altitude vegetation and the Jackson summit. Many photo opportunities. Overnight at Mudde Camp Site.

On this day, you will trek from Mudde Cave to the Caldera and the hot springs, a journey of three hours. From the caldera, continue to Hunter’s Cave Camp, a three-hour trek. Overnight at Hunter’s Cave Camp.

If you are keen about exploring more, you would proceed to the famous Tatum Cave with ancient cave paintings and overnight at the Tatum Camp, a trek of two hours. Overnight at Tatum Cave Camp.

Trek from Tatum Cave Camp to the Park headquarters about 4 hours and later transfer to Sipi Falls and take a walk to the caves on the opposite side of the falls. Sipi Falls is a lovely fall to behold and is where the Sipi River gushes down a steep 50-metre (160 foot) cliff. Swimming at buttom of falls may be optional. Overnight at the Lucam Lodge, which overlooks the falls?

Have a lunch break in Jinja Town, home to Source of the River Nile. If possible, take a boat trip to sopt where the Nile begins and later visit the Bujagali Falls, famous for white-water rafting.

After your hiking experience, you may consider a possibility of a fascinating side-trip to the mysteriousNyero Rock Paintings, 2 hours from Mbale town. The paintings, thought to be 400 years are in three shelters situated close to each other in Ngora in Kumi District. They are said to be among the finest rock paintings in East Africa and in particular feature some good examples of geometrical paintings. They were created by Uganda’s early human residents
